Yoga Nidra is an ancient Yogic technique that allows us to relax consciously. It systematically induces complete physical, mental and emotional relaxation. It has been proven to promote physical, mental and emotional relaxation; it reduces stress, energises the body and promotes wellbeing and healing. It has also been found effective in the treatment of chronic pain.
Alison was first taught Yoga Nidra by her teacher Helen MacBroom also of Ananda Yoga Circle. Helen studied it under Swami Satyananda Saraswati who developed the practice from the ancient tantric practice of nyasa. More recently, Alison, was able to revisit it and study this technique further with Peter Bligh of Mandala Yoga Ashram who has studied it under the guidance of both Swami Niranjananda Swaraswati and Swami Nischalandanda Saraswati.
What to expect:
The practice of Yoga Nidra induces a state of awareness in between sleep and wakefullness. In essence the body believes it is asleep and enters into a healing mode, while the mind retains consciousness. It is a state rather similiar to that which is induced during clinical hypnotherapy, though it is not hypnosis.
Your 1-2-1 session will start with a consultation to assertain your aims and objectives for the practice and helped to develop a "resolve" which is known as a Sankalpa. You then lie down and relax on a yoga mat or treatment coach and usually covered with a blanket. After that it is simply a matter of following the instructions as you are guided through the practice. Different elements can be included depending on the desired outcomes and requirements but the general system of Yoga Nidra always remains the same.
